Education Now And Beyond

Feb 2nd and 3rd, 08

A seminar on the theme “Education Now and Beyond” was held in SRMPS in the first week of February. Prominent Educationists had been invited to address the audience. The day started with the lighting of the lamp followed by a prayer and a welcome address by our Principal Mrs. Kochitty. Principals and teachers of various institutions participated in the seminar.

The first session began with a presentation by our director Mr. Piyush Agarwal who enlightened us about the new era in education followed by a short tea break. The second session started with a talk by Dr. Archana Mishra who spoke on innovative teaching. Use of semantic maps for composition writing was suggested by her. Case study of Pallavi, who has undergone a total transformation of personality, was shown. Mr. Shashwat Tiwari showed various methods of making Maths more interesting for the students. Mr. Sushant Srivastava discussed the buddy system i.e. to divide the class into groups under the leadership of a mentor.

“To make a building strong, stress should be laid on making the foundation strong” was the thought conveyed by Dr. Sunita Gandhi, Director CIS. She added that though roots are not visible they are the most important part of a tree.

The post lunch session was taken up by Mr. Balasubramanian Ex. Director CBSE. ‘A single word can make or break a person’ was the thought conveyed by him. He said that a teacher should be a master of communication.

‘Words can make a half dead person alive or kill a person who is fully alive’. The fourth session ended with a talk by Mr. Denzil Godin who introduced new technologies in education.

Day two was even more interesting than the previous one. After a mesmerizing prayer by our music teacher Priyanka, there was a short but effective presentation by our Principal Mrs. Kochitty on ‘What’s missing in Education’. ‘What do we live for if we do not try to make the world a little easier for each other’ was the message conveyed by her. Mr. Balasubramanian took over and discussed learning/ teaching life skills. He stressed on making the lessons more interesting for the child by encouraging the child to learn independently, by accurate repetition and giving him exposure to tone modulation. The child should learn to listen carefully. Teachers were suggested to relate the lessons to real life situations. Session three, was about ‘Art of living’ taken up by Mr. Tanuj and Ms. Tanu Narayan. They gave the mantra of ‘love – prem’ and inspired every body to join the course. Their divine personality passed on the message of ‘peace’.

Mrs. Geetanjali Kumar a renowned psychologist and counselor from Delhi spoke about the problems generally faced by adolescents. She informed that in this age of modernization adolescence starts at an early age of nine. When the child doesn’t know about the physical changes that are taking place within him / her, he gets annoyed, confused and impatient and starts reacting indifferently. Parents and teachers should cooperate and encourage him on a regular basis, helping him to make adjustments in the family, school as well as in the society. Some of the incidents discussed by her were hair raising and brought tears to everybody’s eyes. She also made us aware of the fact those children especially adolescents add up to 22% of our total population. They need to be guided in the right direction by parents and teachers. There was a question and answer session where she answered some of the questions put by the Principals and teachers.

This seminar was a manifestation of the commitment by the Principals and teachers who participated. The interactions and discussions of the resource people will surely help us to mould the lives of students in a better way so that they grow up to be better citizens and human beings.
